Electrified Thunder Glow Jars Recipe

  • Author: Andria
  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 1 glow jar 1x

Description

Create mesmerizing electrified thunder glow jars that simulate a glowing storm inside a clear glass jar using water, vegetable oil, glow-in-the-dark paint, and glitter. Perfect as a fun, decorative nightlight or science project, these jars glow beautifully when illuminated by a small LED tea light or flashlight, and the shimmer of glitter mimics thunder sparks in a swirling stormcloud.

Ingredients

Scale

Materials and Ingredients

  • 1 clear glass jar with lid
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil (or baby oil for clarity)
  • A few drops of blue or purple food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon glow-in-the-dark paint or glowing powder (non-toxic)
  • 1 teaspoon silver or holographic glitter (for thunder sparks)
  • Small LED tea light or flashlight

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Storm Water: In a bowl, mix the water with a few drops of blue or purple food coloring and stir thoroughly until the color is evenly blended.
  2. Add Glow Power: Stir in the non-toxic glow-in-the-dark paint or glowing powder into the colored water to create a luminous stormy effect.
  3. Fill the Jar: Carefully pour the glowing water mixture into the jar until it is halfway full, ensuring not to spill.
  4. Create the Storm: Slowly pour the vegetable oil into the jar until it is nearly full, leaving some space at the top to allow movement of liquids inside.
  5. Add Thunder Sparks: Sprinkle the silver or holographic glitter into the jar to mimic lightning-like sparkles that will float inside the mixture.
  6. Light It Up: Place a small LED tea light or flashlight underneath or behind the jar in a dark room to illuminate the glowing thunder effect inside the jar.
  7. Shake the Jar: Gently shake or swirl the jar to watch the glowing thunderclouds and sparkling storm sparks move and dance within the jar.

Notes

  • Use non-toxic glow-in-the-dark paint or powder to ensure safety, especially if children are involved in the project.
  • Vegetable oil or baby oil both work; baby oil tends to be clearer and can enhance visual clarity.
  • The LED tea light must be placed outside the jar to prevent damage from moisture and oil.
  • Seal the jar tightly if you want to save and reuse the glow jar later.
  • Shake gently to avoid spills or breaking the jar.
  • Use in a dark room for best glowing effect.
