Description
French Dip Tortilla Roll Ups combine the classic flavors of a French dip sandwich into a fun, easy-to-eat appetizer. Flour tortillas are filled with roast beef, provolone cheese, and crispy French fried onions, then baked until golden and bubbly. Served with a warm, savory au jus dipping sauce made from beef consommé, Worcestershire sauce, and aromatic seasonings, these roll ups are perfect for parties or game day snacks.
Ingredients
Scale
Roll Ups
- 4 large flour tortillas, about 12 inches in diameter
- 8 slices provolone cheese, thinly sliced
- 12 ounces deli roast beef, freshly sliced
- 1 cup French fried onions, store-bought or homemade
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
Au Jus Sauce
- 1 can beef consommé (10.5 ounces)
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons low sodium soy sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Preparation: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper to ensure easy cleanup and prevent sticking.
- Assemble the Roll Ups: Lay a tortilla flat on a clean countertop. On half of the tortilla, place 2 slices of provolone cheese, followed by about 3 ounces of freshly sliced roast beef. Add a generous handful of French fried onions on top for crunch and flavor.
- Seal the Wrap: Lightly brush the inside edge of the tortilla with extra virgin olive oil. Starting from the filled end, roll the tortilla tightly to enclose the fillings securely. Press the oiled edge to seal the roll, then place it seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
- Repeat Assembly: Repeat the filling and rolling process with the remaining tortillas. Once all are rolled, brush the tops and sides of the roll ups with the remaining olive oil to help them brown beautifully.
- Bake: Bake the roll ups in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Rotate the baking sheet halfway through the baking time to ensure even browning. They are done when the tortillas are golden brown and the cheese is beginning to bubble.
- Rest and Slice: Remove the roll ups from the oven and let them rest on a wire rack for 2 minutes. Then slice each roll into halves or thirds, depending on your serving preference.
- Prepare the Au Jus Sauce: In a small saucepan, combine the beef consommé, water, Worcestershire sauce, low sodium soy sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder. Heat over medium heat, whisking occasionally to blend all ingredients. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the sauce is hot and fragrant.
- Serve: Arrange the sliced roll ups on a platter and serve immediately with the warm au jus sauce for dipping.
Notes
- If you prefer a crispier texture, you can brush the roll ups with melted butter instead of olive oil before baking.
- Substitute Swiss cheese or mozzarella for provolone to vary the flavor profile.
- Store leftover au jus in the refrigerator and reheat gently before serving.
- For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free tortillas and confirm that the beef consommé and soy sauce are gluten-free.
- If French fried onions aren’t available, crispy fried shallots or fried leeks can be excellent substitutes.
